  • Free Microchipping Days

Council regularly holds free dog and cat microchipping days. The last event was held on 15 September 2018. The next free microchipping event will be announced on this page once it has been confirmed.

Microchipping your dog or cat helps keep them safe and means you can be reunited much quicker if your pet is lost. In NSW all dogs and cats must be microchipped by 12 weeks old or before being sold or given away (whichever happens first).

Have you checked your pet’s microchip information lately? The easiest way to update your pet’s microchip details is online at petregistry.nsw.gov.au.

If you own a cat or dog, the Companion Animals Act 1998 requires them to be microchipped and registered. Local councils administer and enforce this legislation, and update registration information on the NSW Companion Animals Register. Contact our Animal Services on 4732 7543 to update your dog or cat's details on the Register, or if you have any questions about pet ownership and the law.

    What is required?

Microchipping and Lifetime Registration is a 2 part process that requires NSW dog and cat owners to:

    1. have their animals implanted with a microchip by 12 weeks of age, at point of sale or change of ownership (whichever occurs first) and
    2. register their animals with their NSW local council by 6 months of age.

    How to register

To register your pet you must provide:

    • Certificate of identification or microchip number (preferred) or a statutory declaration, signed and witnessed by a Justice of the Peace.
    • If you are on a pension – your NSW pension card. If posting your registration you must include a copy of both sides of your pension card (writing the number is not sufficient).
    • Additional information will be required for registered breeders, please contact Council for more information.

Fill in the relevant registration form and pay the required fee.

    Where can I register?

Payment can be made in person at any Council in NSW, including at Penrith Council’s customer service centre at Penrith or St Marys, or by mail. Payments made by mail to Council must include relevant paperwork to claim the reduced registration fee. If posting, payment must be made by cheque or money order made payable to Penrith City Council and returned to PO Box 60 Penrith NSW 2751. Council will process your payment and post you a Certificate of Registration.

Payment can also be made online. For further information please visit the NSW Pet Registry.

    Why register?

It's required by law, and helps protect pets, owners and the community. It makes it much more likely your pet can be returned to you safely if they get lost. The law provides for an on-the-spot penalty of $275 for failure to comply with the Act.

    How much does it cost?

The fees for lifetime registration change each year, but the current registration fee for a cat or dog anywhere in NSW is:

    • for a desexed animal - $57
    • for a desexed animal owned by an eligible pensioner - $24
    • for an animal that is not desexed (except an animal kept by a recognised breeder for breeding purposes) - $207
    • for an animal that is not desexed and that is kept by a recognised breeder for breeding purposes - $57.

Change of address or animal details

You need to advise any registration changes including change of address, telephone numbers, ownership change or if your animal dies or goes missing. Penalties apply for non-compliance.
